Well, it's a smoke detector. It detects...smoke...actually it doesn't, but it gives the impression of detecting smoke. And since the only smoke it could possibly fail to detect is the smoke that either comes with the room or is added to the room by you, you are always reasonably safe with it around. At least as safe as with it not around.
